Palestinian appointed to Prince Claus Chair 2005/2006

This week the Institute of Social Studies has appointed Dr Rema Hammami as holder of the Prince Claus Chair in Development and Equity 2005/2006, following her nomination by the Curatorium. The Prince Claus Chair is a rotating chair in the field of development and North-South relations and was established by Utrecht University and the Institute of Social Studies (ISS).

Dr. Hammami is working in Palestine at the Institute of Women`s Studies, Birzeit University, Westbank Palestina. She has done research on civil society development, political movements, state formation and cross cultural relations between Palestinians and Israelis. Recent work includes an analysis of Palestinian – Israeli interactions at road blocks and border crossings, defining the social space of both parties.
Rema Hammami has been appointed as holder of the Prince Claus Chair because of her impressive academic contribution, as an intellectual protagonist, to peace and co-existence in Palestina. Her gendered approach provides a valuable point of entry into issues of governance, civil society, citizinship, rights and peace.

The Curatorium of the Prince Claus Chair is chaired by Princess Máxima of the Netherlands. Young academics from Africa, Asia or Latin America are eligible for appointment to the Chair for one academic year, with the Chair alternating annually between Utrecht University and the ISS. In establishing the Prince Claus Chair, Utrecht University and the ISS aim to advance research and teaching in the field of development and equity, in line with Prince Claus’s views and ideas in this regard. Previous holders of the Chair are Professor Mansoob Murshed (from Bangladesh), Professor Amina Mama (from Nigeria/South Africa) and Professor Rivera-Salgado (from Mexico).
